Persons for Adoption (CPFA) is a non-profit organization in the State of New
Jersey dedicated to the belief that every child deserves a family. Founded over
50 years ago, CPFA is not an adoption agency, but a volunteer organization
working to support those who wish to adopt, and to provide educational and
networking resources to those who have adopted.
Lynne
Witkin was a social worker, adoptive parent, and volunteer advocate for
adoption. She was a CPFA member and also served as president. Lynne recognized
the need for an annual gathering to bring together professionals and parents.
In 1979 she pioneered New Jersey’s first “Let’s Talk Adoption” Conference. CPFA
continued this conference for 40 years.
The
Lynne Witkin/CPFA Scholarship is presented with the hope of encouraging and
supporting qualified social work majors interested in pursuing a career in the
area of adoption/child welfare. With the large number of children in foster
care, many of which are awaiting adoptive parents, there is a critical need for
caring, capable social workers to enter the field of child welfare – protective
services, foster care, adoption, post-adoption services, etc.

A surge in online adoption advertising and the proliferation of unlicensed adoption intermediaries (aka "baby brokers") in the past decade have created a troubling landscape for those impacted by private domestic adoption. Licensed adoption professionals, policymakers, and child welfare advocates should work together to safeguard the well-being of all parties involved in private domestic adoption through education, law enforcement, and legislation.
